The use of closed caption subtitles is carried out in many videos available on optical discs and even on some TV channels. The utility of closed caption subtitles is that they can be turned on/off, which is not the case with hardcoded subtitles. In some countries, the availability of closed caption subtitles is even made a rule, in order to facilitate people with hearing impairments. While the extraction of hardcoded subs is next to impossible, closed caption subtitles can be easily extracted with the help of some software. CCExtractor is a free software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux based operating systems, which provides this utility. It creates a separate file for the extracted subtitles to enable users to add it (the subtitle file) later, to a converted videos. It must be noted that converted video are often unable to retain closed caption subtitles, which results in loosing them during the conversion process. Therefore, one of the many advantages of extracting closed caption subtitles is the ability to add them later to a video. This may be the case for videos converted for viewing on different kinds of devices.
